These are a couple decks that we purchased from people who said it "works fine". They did actually FF, REW and move in Play mode, but that's where it ended. We knew they would need work, as all 20 to 40+ year old tape decks do have a number of things (typically 10-18 hours of tech time + parts) that need to be taken care of prior to being usable, but we don't see too many in as bad a shape as these were (click above photos for details). Again these are decks that came from someone who said they "work fine"! Be careful out there when you're getting excited about bidding on that "good deal" on that on line eb_y, Yahoo, Amazon or other auction that say's "all functions test fine and deck works as it should". Yeah, right. Just FYI.

REEL TO REEL TAPE DECKS:

Above photo is of a Teac A-4010S having typical Main Capstan Belt change and Pinch Roller Arm re-lube operation.
Just FYI as typical of some of the work that is required to bring any 20+ year old Reel to Reel tape deck back to life, regardless of how well a person selling an old deck, that has not been recently serviced, may say it works! In fact the worst decks are commonly the units that are stated as having low hours, have been little or never used, or is NIB (New In Box). While that may seem like a good thing, experience tells us that those are the "scariest" to purchase. They generally require the most work to bring back to a practical level of operation. Just like a car that has sat for many years, not being used, similar "atrophy" happens to most electro-mechanical devices, ie; Turntables, Cassette Decks (the worst), 8-Tracks, VCR's, R2R's etc.

We have completely gone through this unit. Entire internal transport cleaned of old grease & re-lubed, capstan burnished, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. AC input adjusted to correct North American current. Rubber pinch roller reconditioned. Pinch Roller swing arm assembly disassembled and re-lubed as well as the brake arms and tape tension arms. Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes also so it doesn't "dump tape" when stopped. Capstan motor re-lubed. We also adjusted the reel table heights. Internal level adjustment controls cleaned as well as all external level pots for noise free performance. Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked and adjusted for peak performance. Records INCREDIBLY well at at +2dB on CrO2 Tape (High Bias) and +4dB on Normal Bias Tape! Plays great on both channels. All level meters playback even. Speed adjusted to 100% accuracy! (meaning that a factory tape recorded at 1kHz plays back at exactly 1kHz!) (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 12 hours. Pinch roller and heads all in like NEW condition!!!  Deck looks great!

Beautiful Condition,
Akai GX-280DSS, 3 head, Quad / Stereo, Open Reel Tape Deck. This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer! If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use", here you go. Only about 25 % of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. This one made it through to test great! Looks and sounds great! We have completely gone through it. Will play 3", 5" & 7" reels.

We have completely gone through this unit. Entire internal transport / head plate assembly, disassembled, cleaned of old grease, re-lubed and reassembled. Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned, as well as all internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip, capstan burnished, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. Pinch Roller swing arm disassembled and re-lubed. All four internal belts replaced with new for years of trouble-free service. Motor re-lubed. All internal pots and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function. Both spindles in perfect alignment. Internal level controls adjusted with factory test tones and an O-Scope. Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance. Plays perfectly and records great @ -3db! (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy). There is one issue with this deck in that the "Right" VU meter is consistently low in visual output. This is only a meter issue as the internal levels were set using our O-Scope. To record simply use the left meter and match index marks on the input level knobs. We verified this with 1kHz Sine wave, 20-20k pink noise and recorded material. Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition. Speed checked to 98.10% accuracy. (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 18+ hours. Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!  Deck looks great with only minor wear to the case.

- Built-in Noise Suppressor

- 1/4" Stereo Headphone jack

Again this deck has been completely gone through and with the exception of the right meter always appearing low, everything works great!
This deck sounds great for a "nothing fancy & inexpensive" reel to reel deck. Exceptional performer sonically in both playback and record modes (and we are pretty critical). We have completely gone through this unit. Entire internal transport assembly cleaned of old grease, re-lubed. Both Rubber pinch rollers have been removed, cleaned and reconditioned, as well as all internal drive belts for positive grip. The counter belt was replaced. Both capstans burnished, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. Both pinch roller swing arms disassembled and re-lubed. Both spindles in perfect alignment. Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance. Due to an issue with recording, we restored this as a "playback only" deck. Plays perfectly and sounds great! We have completely gone through this unit. All 4 main drive tires reconditioned for trouble-free service. Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned, internal transport cleaned of old grease & re-lubed, capstan burnished, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. Pinch Roller swing arm disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed and also re-tensioned arm spring.  Also hub brakes have been cleaned, re-lubed, and adjusted on fast wind modes also (even when these decks were new, they were famous for spooling off a bit of tape upon the first moment of "Stop". Motor has been re-lubed as well. All internal pots and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function. Both spindles in perfect alignment. Head in great shape as well, with many years of performance left. Plays well and does record although again, it's a portable so the recording results you get from them is "crude" at best as there's no monitoring of record signal as it happens and no level indicators, not to mention that their recording circuitry is fairly simple. Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition.  Speed checked to 97.0% accuracy (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 4 hours). Only issue is that there's a compartment on the bottom (that originally held the microphone that is not included) and it's missing the door. Cosmetically in near new condition!

Portable transistorized mini-reel to reel tape deck. The Sony TC-123. These were sold as entry level, low usage, tape recorders for applications where stereo or "Hi-Fidelity" were not required. The tape made on them were generally of very low quality and were for note taking, playing "letters to home" from Vietnam, practicing speeches or just for fun. If you have older tapes made by family members, that were made on a portable transistor (usually demonstrated from the 2.5" to 3.5" reel diameter) that you are interested in hearing or transferring to a different medium, such as CD ROM and you know that it was recorded on a 2-track, 1 channel (mono; record one side in mono then turn it over and record the other side in mono) tape recorder, then here you go. Also great if you have a media transfer business and need to transfer customer's "letters to home" tapes. If your tapes are stereo, or were made on a 4 track 1 or 2 channel machine, then you would be much better off using a normal, full-size reel to reel tape deck. These AC powered versions of small tape decks have a lot more motor power, less mechanical noise and are much more speed accurate and constant due to more powerful motors, where as the battery powered versions are very "sketchy" to use, due to more delicate transports / motors. We know, we've restored a few, and they "sort of work" at best. The TC-123 also is superior due to it's "capstan drive" transport as opposed to the cheaper "rim" drive found on the DC transports. Again, this one works great.
 Features include:

- AC Powered
- Capstan Drive (not cheaper "rim" drive)
- Dual
speeds at 3 3/4ips / 9.5 cms and extra long 1 7/8 ips / 4.75 cms (Speed changed with capstan sleeve)

 - Plays up to 3" reels
 - Input level / Volume control
- 1/8" Mono Output Jack
- 1/8" Mono Input Jack

Again, deck has been gone through. Rubber drive rollers and reel hubs have been reconditioned & heads have been cleaned.
(Total time investment in refurb ~ 4 hours) Works as well as it did originally. Even though it is shown in photos as standing almost vertically, it is best and was designed to be used, laying down horizontally on it's back. Best use would be for playing / transferring your old, 1/4", Mono, 2-track / 1 channel, 3 3/4 or 1 7/8 ips tapes to another media / format. We will include a cable to connect the 1/8" output to a pair of RCA's (mono to stereo). Measures 9" wide x 6" deep x 3" thick. Includes our standard 90 day limited warranty for basic function.
SONY TC-123
 Cond. 8.5

*A note about Reverse / Auto-Reverse /: Reverse means that you can manual switch directions in play mode. You can generally do this at any point in the tapes travel.
Auto-Reverse usually means that a deck will automatically switch play directions at the end. This is usually triggered by special foil tape installed on the tapes for sensors on the machine to pick-up. Some machines also require longer foil tape than others. Also decks vary in the side the foil tape has to be installed on to function. If you tape does not have the foil installed or it's foil is too short, or it happens to be installed on the wrong side, Auto-Reverse may not function. Auto-Reverse may only be designed to work in one direction as well.

This allows the faster 7.5 ips playback / recording speeds to be achieved. Without this you will only be able to do the slower speeds.
If yours is misplaced then here's the fix. These are new speed sleeves machined to exact specs and made of "303 NON-MAGNETIC STAINLESS", not soft brass, that has a short life, so the locking dovetail will not wear. These fit snug and will stay on with the exact "dove-tail" joint machined to perfection.

These enable you to play / use the faster 7.5 ips tape speed if your deck requires a capstan sleeve to do that. We are always investigating which Akai Reel decks these will fit. We do know it will fit the above listed decks. If you do not see yours listed PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL or CALL to ask if it will, as we do not know yet. This is a "work-in-progress".  As soon as we discover additional models that this sleeve will or will not fit, we will post that info. STUDY THE PHOTOS CLOSELY TO DETERMINE THE FIT FOR YOUR DECK.
We know these do not fit X-4000D, 4000DB, 4000DS, 4400 or the "M-" series as they use a different sleeve.

* (The text in the photos state these are aluminum. That was a misprint we erroneously imbedded in the photos. They are made of 303, non-magnetic stainless steel, as stated above)

We have completely gone through this unit. Both Main Drive belt and Counter belt have been reconditioned for trouble-free service. Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned, as well as all internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip, internal transport cleaned of old grease & re-lubed, capstan burnished, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. Pinch Roller swing arm disassembled, cleaned of varnished / frozen grease and re-lubed. Also hub brakes have been cleaned, re-lubed, and adjusted on fast wind modes also. Motor has been re-lubed as well. All internal pots and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function. Both spindles in perfect alignment. We also adjusted the reel table heights. Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance. Plays perfectly and records well at +5dB. (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy). This is one of the best recording and sounding decks we have had in the past few years! Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition. Both level meters playback even. Speed checked to 99.97% accuracy . Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!! This unit was very clean and well cared for when we started on it. Cosmetically in near new condition!

Very simple Sony TC-105, Reel to Reel Play / Record tape deck. Nothing fancy but great for 4-Track / 4-Channel (mono) tapes made mostly from the 1950's into the early 1970's. While it will play both channels of a stereo tape, the signal out is blended. The deck can be a "stand alone" unit  as it has a built in amplifier and speaker, or can be connected to a CD burner / sound system. It is designed to be used horizontally. Great "industrial / school / institutional series deck. Perfect for those early / old reel tapes that were recorded in mono or the tapes recorded utilizing all 4 separate tracks to conserve tape. These units utilize a substantial capstan drive flywheel which reduces wow and flutter. It has been cleaned and lubricated so well, and weighs so much that it will freewheel 85 seconds after power is removed!!
Features include:

- Triple tape speeds at 7.5 ips / 19cms, 3 3/4ips / 9.5 cms and 1 7/8 ips / 4.8 cms (all three that were available on consumer decks at the time)
 - Mono Playback & recording
 - Individual track recording capability
- Auto and Manual record level controls
- Tone control for built-in amp / speakers

 - Side mounted 1/8" jacks for Headphone / Monitor, Microphone, Aux In and Ext Speaker.
- Built in Amplifier and speaker

 - "Monitor" jack can be also used for connection to a CD burner / sound system
 - Will play 7" and smaller reels.
 - Solid State electronics

As stated earlier we have completely gone through it cleaning, lubing, adjusting, demagnetizing and testing everything. Plays well. All rubber re-conditioned. Pinch roller, belts and heads all in good condition! Deck is designed to be used lying on it's back (horizontally).  Measures 14" deep x 15" wide x 6" tall and weighs 20 lbs unpacked. Comes with original Sony lid. Includes our standard 90 day limited warranty.

We have completely gone through this unit. Entire internal transport disassembled, cleaned of old grease, re-lubed and reassembled. Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned, capstan burnished, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. New main drive belt installed and counter belt reconditioned for years of trouble-free service. All internal pots and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function. All meter lamps are currently working. Both spindles in perfect alignment. Brakes on both sides in good shape. Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been adjusted for peak performance. Due to intermittent recording function on the left channel (primarily when using High-Bias / Chrome tape. Seems to record well with Normal Bias tape where we did get record levels of -3dB), deck was restored as a "Playback" deck. Plays perfectly well on both speeds (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy and audibly undetectable WOW & Flutter). Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition. Both level meters playback even. Speed electronically on both Hi and Low settings to 100% accuracy. Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!! Deck looks great!

Looks near great & is "Ready-to-go" for playback use
! This is the Realistic version of the sought after TEAC X-300, Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Will play / record stereo 1/4" tapes on reels up to 7". This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer for playback use. If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" for playback or for transferring your tapes to another media such as CD or Hard drive, then here you go. Only about 25% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. This one made it through and functions great for playback! Only cosmetic issue is that previous owner engraved his name / ss number in the top of the unit (see lower photos above). Overall, deck looks and sounds great! We have completely gone through it.
 Features include:

- 3 Heads for instant monitoring of tape levels while recording (again a bit of a moot point since it's restored as a Playback only deck)
 - 3 Motors for trouble free performance (has a lot to do with it still being a viable piece of gear due to less rubber parts, only 2 belts)
 - "Soft-Touch", solenoid assist tape transport
 - Dual speeds at 7.5 ips / 19cms and 3 3/4ips / 9.5 cms
 - Source / Monitor selector
- 2 position Tape EQ selector
 - 2-Position Tape type / bias selector
 - Record Mute
 - Separate & dual mic and line level controls
 - Dual 1/4" front mounted mic inputs
 - Left & Right output level controls
 - Dual analog, lighted VU level meters
 - Auto-Stop for all transport functions
 - Variable output level controls for each channel
 - RCA I/O's
 - Dual front mounted 1/4" Microphone inputs

Specs:
Frequency Response: 30-28,000 Hz
± 3 dB @ 7 1/2 ips
30-20.000 Hz
± 3 dB @ 3 3/4 ips
S/N Ratio:  > 58 dB at 7 1/2 ips, >55 dB at 3 3/4 ips
THD:  0.9% at 0 VU
Wow & Flutter:  < 0.06% (WRMS) @ 7 1/2 ips
0.08% (WRMS) @ 3 3/4 ips
Fast-Wind Time: 90 sec. @ 1800 Feet
Playback / Record Head Material: Hard Perm-Alloy
