Huge "Wall-O-Sound" at any volume level. Lots of presence, and while the low-end will shake a concrete floor, it remains very "tight". These are the slightly smaller version or their "Flagship" 15" speaker at the time. After installing new foam surrounds, each woofer was AF swept from 2000 Hz all the way down to 18 Hz! Also these are VERY efficient at 95dB!!! Features include: - 3-way, Acoustic Suspension / Infinite Baffle cab design -12" Low Frequency Driver (woofer) with Butyl Rubber suspension - 4.5" cone midrange, with coated cloth suspension -1" Domed Tweeter - Mid and Tweeter Attenuators with 3-Postition variable switches ranging from 0, -3, -6 dB for each - "Real" internal crossover (not just a cap on the tweeters) which has a lot to do with the detailed and balanced sonics of this speaker Specifications: Frequency Response: 38-20,000Hz ±4dB Sensitivity: 95dB 1w @ 1m Cross-over frequencies: 800 & 3.5kHz Impedance: 6-8Ω each Recommended Minimum Power amplifier rating: 15 watts The Walnut grained, vinyl wrapped cabinets in great shape as are the original brown, acoustically transparent, terry-knit grills. Grill frames perfect with no broken or repaired parts. One of the midranges, has some slight "wrinkling" to the cone, similar to what we commonly see in Pioneer HPM-100 mids, but doesn't affect performance. Great speaker for just about any volume level and any genre of music. Again, capable of HUGE sound with any good amp. Look, work and sound great!. I actually sold the later versions as that was in about '83. Fabulous sounding speakers. AUDIO EQUALIZERS and our philosophy on them. "Are Equalizers really necessary? I just paid $30 grand for my speakers. They shouldn't need any EQ. Right!??" Short answer is yes, an EQ will generally be beneficial to most systems. Most speaker designers strive to make a speaker's curve as "flat"* as their projected size parameters and target retail price will allow. The human hearing curve is not "flat". Most folks' hearing is accentuated in the midrange (it's where the human voice is centered) and attenuated in the bass and treble. Sort of a reverse "rock-n-roll smile" curve. When you hear a good, "flat" response speaker, it will likely appear to have, at least for most listeners, an over abundance of mids. It likely will also have a deficiency in bass and possibly treble. It will most likely sound "thin", the degree of which can vary from slight to extreme, depending, on many variables. This might not even be readily apparent when auditioning speakers, but generally if you hear a pair speakers with an appropriately adjusted, EQ engaged, then you listen to it bypassed, you will probably want to re-engage it as quickly as possible. The classic arguments against using an EQ have been that an EQ, or any additional inserted signal processing device, makes the signal path less "pure" and adds noise. Also, again, "these speakers were expensive and shouldn't need an EQ". To address the first point, this issue can usually be reduced to a more than desirable point by utilizing a high quality EQ or signal processor. The noise floor should certainly be below audible levels, and it doesn't take too much of an EQ to achieve that for most folks systems. While the first point is valid, a good EQ's benefits usually far outweigh any minor noise issues, which are probably below most listeners audible limits in the first place. The second issue was answered previously, in the above paragraph. In fact, the better the speakers, the more they would likely benefit from a reduction of the midrange frequencies, due to their as "flat as possible" curve. Again, this would apply to the average persons hearing curve. Some "cheap" speakers, will have a "rock-n-roll smile" EQ curve built-in by utilizing drivers, crossover and cabinet combinations, that have an over abundance of bass and treble, and a deficit of mids by design. That would beg the question of "why wouldn't they all just do that then". The answer to that is that any respectable speaker manufacturer wouldn't try and dictate a built-in curve into a speaker other than as flat as assigned parameters will allow, for a number of reasons. Another less apparent, but still valid reason for utilizing an EQ can be to compensate for listening room acoustic characteristics. This is generally more difficult to assess, but overtime could become a desired need. This need would obviously change with any parameter change in the listening environment. Also, and no offense, but as we age and as we are exposed to various, sometimes, injurious sonic environments and events, our sensitivity to frequency ranges will change. One way to look at a specific speaker / listening environment combination is to think of it as a blank artists canvas. A really high quality speaker system would be comparable to a high quality canvas, brushes and material. Said another way, a "non-flat" EQ curve / listening environment / speaker combination is akin to starting your painting with a dirty, blotchy canvas. The listening environment to a well lit room with natural lighting, conducive to a creative mood. Until you "shape" the EQ, there is no painting on the blank canvas. Once you shape the EQ to your tastes, in a way that compliments the speaker design / room combination, you have created your work of art. While I can appreciate all the arguments for not using an EQ, in the end, I generally use an EQ with it's curve slightly boosted in the bass and treble frequencies and attenuated through the mid frequencies from "Zero" position (the "rock-n-roll smile" curve). It will usually require adjustment following any change in speakers, listening environment parameter adjustments and with the material I am listening too. I also have a 1/3 octave RTA monitor / spectrum analyzer with a pink noise generator and analyzing mic to establish an accurate "flat" point to start from. * Contrary to a somewhat common misconception, "Flat" does not mean "dull". "Flat" refers to the graphic "curve" of a speakers output when analyzed by a spectrum analyzer. Ideally a speaker should be able to reproduce the human hearing range with all frequencies as close to "zero" (even amplitude or "flat") as is practical for the intended design / price point levels. The listener can then modify it from there by various methods (usually some sort of signal processor such as an EQ) to their tastes. |

![]() NEW LISTING 6/1/09 (click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) VINTAGE SANSUI STEREO SPEAKERS MODEL S-815 S815 #...3666 / #...3683 Circa late 1980's for sale Great sounding, looking and performing, Sansui 3-way speaker system. I have a bit of a "bias" towards these as I sold early versions at the first hi-fi dealer I worked for in the early 80's. Great balanced sound, nice punchy bottom end. Very efficient and bright where they need to be. Great speaker where mid to higher volumes are desired. We just replaced the woofer surrounds with fresh foam. Cosmetically the only issue is some small dents around the edge of one of the mid dust caps (cosmetics only. see lower photo above). Features include: - 3-Way, Acoustic Suspension cabinet design - 12" ribbed paper cone woofer with existing foam surrounds in great shape - 5" paper cone midrange w/ Mylar dust cap - 2.5" Cone type tweeter Specs: Frequency Response: 29-22,000Hz (in normal listening room, not just an anechoic chamber Efficiency: 89dB 1w @ 1m Nominal Impedance: 8Ω each Cross-over frequencies: at 900Hz & 4.5kHz Maximum input power rating: 160 watts Again, both woofers have fresh, new foam surrounds installed and we have completely tested all drivers. Tested for all frequencies with a sweep generator. Wood grain vinyl wrapped cabinets in great condition as are the original knit, dark navy grills! Great "all around" sound and get very loud! Each measures 31.5" high x 15.25" wide x 11.5" deep and weighs 38 lbs each. Includes our standard 90 day speaker warranty (excluding problems due to under / over powering). ![]() NEW LISTING 11/24/08 (click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) VINTAGE ELECTRO-VOICE EV STEREO SPEAKERS EVS-16B Circa 1976-80 MADE IN THE USA for sale While there is an old repair to the front edge of one of the cabinets (see above photos), what they lack in looks, they more than make up for in sonics. VERY IMPRESSIVE for overall output, balance and punch. Between these and the RTR's we also just posted, one of the two may end up in my project studio as utility speakers if they don't get snatched up. These passed some our our most critical and demanding tests. Perfect for a rockin' "man cave", where some character is OK. Features include: - 3-Way, Acoustic Suspension design - 12" woofer with fresh foam surround installed - 5" Conical Midrange - 2" Conical Tweeter - Hand built, "Real" internal crossover - Bypassed Tweeter attenuator Specs: Frequency Response: 30-20,000Hz ± 3dB Nominal Impedance: 8Ω each Cross-over frequency: at 700 & 3kHz Recommended Minimum Power amplifier rating: 10 watts Max power rating: 100 watts Again, these have an old repair to the front edge of one of the cabinets that is a bit distracting cosmetically (see photos above), but have a magical combination of sound. They have simple, paper cone drivers and normal size motors, but for some reason have it right. We have completely tested all drivers independently in these speakers. We removed the nasty fiberglass insulation and installed new poly-spun batting for low-freq damping. We also removed the typically troublesome tweeter attenuators for better performance. Tested for all frequencies with a sweep generator. With the exception of the old repair to the front edge of one, the wood grain, vinyl wrapped cabinets in good cosmetic condition as well as the original grills. Woofers have just had fresh & complete re-foamed surrounds, for years of trouble free service. All drivers work and sound great! These are very "balanced" sounding speakers, with great presence and tight, punchy low-end and good power handling characteristics. Each measures 25" high x 14.5" wide x 13.75" deep and weighs 38 lbs each. Includes our standard, limited 90 day speaker warranty ( excluding problems due to under / over powering). ELECTRO-VOICE EV Condition 8 (due to front edge cabinet repair) $349. pair |
![]() ![]() NEW LISTING 3/20/09 (click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) PRE-APPRECIATED YAMAHA STEREO SPEAKERS YST-A755 YSTA755 #...2277 / #...2305 Circa ~1999 for sale We aren't typically very interested in A/V speakers, but these Yamaha YST-A755's can hold their own in our 2-channel system. This speaker is large enough, that even though it is a modern, A/V cabinet, it sounds great on an "old skool", 2-channel amp! Great speaker for detail, balance and that big "wall-o-sound" presence. Handles power VERY WELL! Features include: - 2-way, Bass-Reflex design - 8", Polypropylene, Low Frequency Drivers (woofer) -1" Soft Dome, coated cloth Tweeter - 2.25" tuned port for extended low end - "Real" internal crossover (not just a cap on the tweeters) - All original Yamaha made drivers Specs: Efficiency: ~88-89 dB 1w @ 1m Nominal Impedance: 8Ω each Recommended Minimum Power amplifier rating: 10 watts Max power rating: 160 watts While these speakers are not our typical fare, they are great sounding 2-channel speakers (yes, of course they would sound great in a theater / surround system) By nature, the "tall" stature of the Yamaha YST-A755 puts the tweeter more on plane with your ears, instead of your knees. These are some what "cosmetically challenged" up close, but nothing too distracting. One of the cabinets had some wall mounting brackets bolted in to it so it has a few small holes and both speakers have a few minor scuffs to the satin black, wood grain finish. The original black knit grills are in good shape with a few very minor snags and one is missing the "Yamaha" logo (see far right photos above. The photos were taken at close range with a flash and make the blemishes look very much more noticeable then they are in reality). Grill frames perfect with no broken or repaired parts. Again, both woofer surrounds freshly replaced for years of trouble-free service. Great speaker for up to fairly high volume levels. These are "detail" oriented speakers that can also get loud and fill a room. Great for about any type of music. We tested them extensively and have temporarily added them to our audition line-up because we were so impressed. If you're looking for "true" wide frequency response, balance and detail and a speaker that can handle power well too, then these may be the speaker for you. They ROCK!!! This would be a great speaker for a room with limited space, but you need to get loud as the cabinet has a lot of cubic volume, but with a small "foot print". Cabinets measure 33" H x 10" W x 11"D and weigh a hefty 39 lbs each. Includes our standard 90 day limited warranty (excluding problems due to under / over powering). ![]() NEW LISTING 11/24/08 (click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) VINTAGE PIONEER STEREO SPEAKERS CS-53 CS53 Circa 1970-76 MIJ for sale Early versions of Pioneer's CS series. Solidly built of plywood (most speakers, except Klipsch use particle board), simple 2-way speaker. These speakers were one of the most surprising we listened to in a while. Given their lack of internal sophistication, we did not expect much, but were more than pleasantly surprised. They handled some of our most difficult test cuts fabulously. Great low end punch with out being mushy, just enough hi's and mids (without any EQ) and very pleasing overall. Handled our Hafler power amp fine, would really shine on a low powered tube amp or where you need an efficient speaker for that vintage lower wattage solid state, receiver such as a Marantz 2210-2230, Sansui 221, 331, 441, 250, Kenwood KR-2400-3600 or similar. Features: - 2-Way, Bass Reflex design - 12" Low Frequency Driver (woofer) and Non-deteriorating cloth surround - 3.7" Non-deteriorating paper surrounded, tweeter - 1/4" phono and "Binding Post" input jacks - "Real" internal crossover for accurate distribution of frequencies - Plywood cabinets with real Walnut wood veneer finish Specifications are: Impedance: 8 Ω Frequency response: 45Hz-20kHz Efficiency: 94dB 1w @ 1m X-over point: 3,000Hz Power handling: 40 watts Unfortunately these speakers are fairly cosmetically challenged with numerous "battle scars" to the real walnut wood veneer cabinets. Nothing independently too distracting, just numerous scuffs and dings. These are very "live" sounding speakers with great punch and bottom end definition. Nice "Wall-o-sound" sonics and very efficient. Original cloth grills in great shape. All the drivers are in perfect working and cosmetic condition! Cabinets, while dinged have just had a fresh, hand-rubbed coat of bees wax and lemon oil. Each measures 12.75" tall x 16.5" wide x 11.75" deep and weigh 28 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard 90 day limited warranty (excluding problems due to under / over powering) Pioneer CS-53 Condition 8 (due to numerous minor "battle scars") $279. pair |

These are great performing speakers for small spaces as reproduction speakers, and also make great "near field monitors" for the project studio. Loaded with Danish, Vifa drivers and an incredible, hand-made original crossover. Cosmetically they are in fine condition with little wear. One of the woofers has a linear crease radiating out, but as it is back coated with cross-ply woven cloth, and front poly coated, this appears to only be cosmetic. We have just installed fresh, new foam surrounds for trouble-free service. The speakers have been through our standard, rigorous test procedures and passed with flying colors. Features: - 2-Way, Acoustic Suspension Speaker Design - 8" Poly-Coated, cloth backed, cast frame, SEAS- CA21FC / H347 Low Frequency Transducer (woofer) from Norway - .75" Soft dome, Vifa, D19TD-05 Poly tweeter from Denmark - "Real" internal crossover (not just a cap on the tweeters) that is incredibly well built - Dual, 24k gold, 3-way Banana input jacks that can be "Bi-Amped" by removing jumpers - Cabinets completely filled with spun Poly batting to damp low resonance Again, we replaced the foam surrounds on both woofers for years of trouble-free service. Input is via recessed, 3-way, "banana" binding posts! The cabinets are finished in black, "Pebble" coating and are in great shape. The original black, knit grill cloths also in great shape as well. With the exception of one missing locating pin (grills still stay firmly attached) the grill frames in great shape as well. Great sounding with sonic detail and balance. Great for smaller systems or for surround speakers. These are small "bookshelf" / wall-mount size speakers so their height and foot print is minimal. We have completely tested them including sweeping them with an audio generator looking for any acoustical anomalies or extraneous noises or sounds. They look, work and sound great! Each measures 18.75" high x 11" wide x 8" deep and weighs 19 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard 90 day limited warranty (excluding problems due to under / over powering. While these are fairly "cosmetically challenged", they do perform Ok. These are not "loud" speakers and are designed for fairly low wattage ranges. Best for back ground use or for their appearances. Features include: - 2-way, Omni-Directional, Acoustic-Suspension design - 6.5" Low Frequency Driver (woofer) -2" Conical, Paper Tweeter - "Real" internal crossover - High Frequency attenuator - Both screw terminal and RCA inputs - 8 Ohms impedance Again, these are fairly cosmetically challenged. They were apparently set too close to a heater, which slightly warped a side area of one of the cabinets and blistered the wood grain vinyl wrapping. Also, the vinyl wrapping on the tops have shrunk a bit, so there's about .25" uncovered around the top. We have completely disassembled these speakers (a very difficult task) cleaned all and replaced the internal crossover caps with fresh ones. Again, these speakers are for lower volumes and power ratings. Not a speaker that should be purchased for louder volumes. Each measures 17" x 12" and weighs 16 lbs unpacked. AUDIO EQUALIZERS and our philosophy on them. "Are Equalizers really necessary? I just paid $30 grand for my speakers. They shouldn't need any EQ. Right!??" Short answer is probably yes, an EQ will generally be beneficial to most systems. When you hear a good, "flat" response speaker, it will likely appear to have an over abundance of mids, at least for most listeners. It will also likely have a deficiency in bass and possibly treble. It will most likely sound "thin", the degree of which can vary from slight to extreme, depending again, on many variables. This might not even be readily apparent when auditioning speakers, but generally if you hear a pair speakers with an appropriately adjusted, EQ engaged, then you listen to it bypassed, you will want to re-engage it as quickly as possible. |

![]() ![]() NEW LISTING 12/23/09 (click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) VINTAGE KENWOOD SPEAKERS KL-888S KL888S Circa 1979-81 Made in Japan SOLD 1/5/10 for sale Classic lattice grill, vintage & large Kenwood KL-888S stereo speakers. 5-Way, 6-Speaker / Driver, Bass Reflex cabinet design. These are VERY efficient speakers with above average tone balance for late '70's speakers. Plenty of top end that can be filtered / tailored to your tastes with built-in attenuator or external EQ / tone control. Also HUGE & tight low end, likely due to the "Air-Suspension" cabinet design. They also seem to be able to handle "power" better than your average speaker. Not simply referring to they're wattage rating, but just the way the perform at higher power / volume levels without "falling apart" sonically. Interestingly, all of the internal components are rated for 220 watts EACH! This is the first time we have ever had a speaker, where even the smallest of drivers had the same, and very high power rating, of the largest. Among the top performers of the many speakers we have auditioned over the years. Features: - 16" Non-deteriorating Cloth surround Woofer - 6.5" Non-deteriorating, paper surround Mid - 6.25" x 2" Cast Aluminum, Horn, Upper Midrange with Compression increasing Phase Plug - Dual 2.25" Radial Horn Tweeters with Phase Plugs to increase compression - 1.25", Mylar Cone, Radial Super Tweeter - "Real" internal cross-over, not just a couple of "caps" on the mids and tweets - 3-position Hi frequency attenuators, using resistors, not failure prone Ni-Chrome wire, for custom tailoring sound to your tastes and listening room - Dual 2.25" Tuned ports for extended low end - Vented / cloth woofer dust cap for increasing low end efficiency Specs: Frequency Response: 25-22,000Hz +- 3dB Efficiency: 98dB 1w @ 1m Nominal Impedance: 8Ω Cross-over frequencies: 700Hz, 2kHz, 5kHz and 10kHz Recommended Nominal Power Amplifier range: 10-200 watts Recommended MAX Power rating: 250 watts (again, each and every driver in the cabinet is rated at 220 watts!!!) Very nice looking wood grain, vinyl wrap cabinets. Both Poly molded grills in good shape with normal minor wear. The cabinets are in good shape, with typical, normal "battle scars" (see detail photos above. Photos were taken very close, so dings / dents appear in photos, more prominent than they actually are. They're not really too distracting). All drivers are in perfect condition, work and sound fine! Tested for all frequencies with a sweep generator. Speakers look and sound GREAT! Huge, accurate and loud sound, but also very efficient at lower powers due to their 98dB rating! If you're looking for a great performing speaker at medium to higher volume applications, you will not be disappointed with these speakers. Each measures 26.25" tall x 17.5" wide x 11" deep and weighs 54 lbs unpacked. The vinyl wood grain finish cabinets look great as do the "black" knit grills with only very minor scuffing to tops. We have completely gone through them, including disassembling the attenuator sections and cleaning for trouble-free service. Woofers have "non-deteriorating" cloth surrounds. We have completely tested them including sweeping them with an audio generator looking for any acoustical anomalies or extraneous noises or sounds. They work and sound great! I just spent about 20 minutes auditioning these speakers. I periodically see a handful of writings on the web from people "trashing" Japanese built speakers from the 1980's. I've sold speakers new and used since 1983. I have been a dealer for most of the mainstream brands, as well as some of the more esoteric lines such as Klipsch, Polk Audio, Boston Acoustic, Mission, B&O, EV, McIntosh, JBL, Genesis, Advent, EPI, ESS, KRK, Alesis, DCM, Bose, Infinity, and many, many others, including many "Pro" audio / true studio monitors. I go most every year to the audio trade shows (CES for consumer level audio and NAMM for Pro level audio), and to the serious high end show (sponsored by "The Absolute Sound") and listen to "Race Car Grade" audio (including speakers ranging in price from $14,000 to $170,000, by brands most "main stream audio buyers" have never heard of, with construction / design quality and models most folks can not even imagine). Were "mainstream" Japanese speakers some of the best ever built? No. But neither were most of the mainstream / "Mid-Fi" speakers that folks are typically exposed to. I sold many of the Japanese speakers built by brands such as Sansui, Kenwood, Yamaha, Pioneer, Sony, Technics, and many others. Their speakers were generally "a lot of bang for the buck" in that they usually had good balance, detail, power handling, and were affordable. No they didn't typically have real wood veneer cabinets or cast frame drivers among appointments, but those two details add dramatically to a speakers cost. Bottom line is that if 1980's speakers from Japan sounded so bad, how come they out sold everything else combined? It wasn't just their price. Again, like many speakers from this lineage, these speakers are able to handle large transient volume / power. If you want big and loud, with balance and accuracy, then here you go!!! We pounded on them with our listening room Hafler Power Amp and they performed fantastically! Very deep, yet finely "tight" bass, with plenty of top-end that can be attenuated to any degree you desire, via dual attenuators. Each measures 28" tall x 17.75" wide x 10.25" deep and weigh 44 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard 90 day limited warranty ( excluding problems due to under / over powering). Pioneer CS-703 Cond. 8.5 $499. pair. SOLD 1/4/10

![]() ![]() NEW LISTING 6/13/09 (click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) PRE-APPRECIATED BOSTON ACOUSTIC STEREO SPEAKERS A150 A-150 #3280 / 3287 Circa 1981-'86 Made in USA SOLD 11/24/09 for sale One of the larger of the Boston Acoustic models. The Boston Acoustic A150 stereo speakers. Great speaker for detail & balance. These are the "real wood Oak veneer" versions. I was a dealer for these when they were new and the Oak versions with natural Linen grills were stocked very rarely. Features include: - 3-way, Acoustic-Suspension design -10" Low Frequency Driver (woofer) -4.5" "Ferrofluid" Cooled Mid- Range in it's own, isolated enclosure to reduce dB robbing bass reflections -1" Soft-dome, "Ferrofluid" Cooled Tweeter Specs: Frequency Response: 36-25kHz @ +- 3dB Efficiency: 90dB 1w @ 1m Nominal Impedance: 8Ω each Cross-over frequencies: at 550Hz & 3kHz Nominal Impedance: 8Ω nominal / 6Ω minimum Recommended Minimum Power amplifier rating: 15 watts minimum While these speakers are physically large, it is not without reason. Their expansive baffle board serves to reduce any "out of phase" reflections / wave anomalies from neighboring surfaces. This way the speaker can "control" it's sonic results, instead of having it's environment as the major contributor. Secondly the tall stature of the A150 puts the tweeter more on plane with your ears, instead of your knees. Again, these are the rarer "Real Oak Wood" veneer cabinet versions. The cabinets are in great shape with the exception of a small dark stain on one of the sides (see lower photos above). The original grill cloth also in great shape, with the exception of on one grill, what appears to be a couple small bleached spots, some slight darkened areas and a very small snag (the grills are not "greenish" as they appear in the lower photos, but natural linen color. The green tint is due to a reaction with the camera setting and the fluorescent lighting they were shot under). Both woofer surrounds just replaced with new foam for years of trouble-free service. Great speaker for up to mid volume levels. Again, these are more "detail" oriented speakers not "Power Pounding Party" speakers. If that's what you're looking for then don't buy these. These are "definitive" classic Boston speakers. These are a one or two "up" on Advent Loudspeakers. I personally own a pair of Boston Acoustic A100's next to a pair of Advent "The Loudspeakers". Both are very close sounding, but I prefer the sound of my Bostons for a few reasons. Just "bigger" sounding. If you're looking for "true" wide frequency response, balance and detail then these may be the speaker for you (great for most all types of recordings; R&R, POP, RAP, Jazz and new-country, acoustic guitar recordings & classical / symphonic / string music. Very accurate, detailed sound!!! Cabinets measure 32.75" H x 16" W x 8.25" D and weighs a hefty 47 lbs each. We pounded on them with our listening room Hafler Power Amp and they performed fantastically! Very deep, yet finely "tight" bass, with plenty of top-end that can be attenuated to any degree you desire, via dual attenuators. Each measures 25.75" tall x 16.25" wide x 11.25" deep and weigh 40 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard speaker warranty (excluding problems due to under / over powering). ![]() NEW LISTING 4/7/09 (click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) PRE-OWNED BOSE PASSIVE SUBWOOFER W/ SATELLITE CROSSOVER BUILT-IN "ACOUSTIMASS®" AM-5 SERIES II SOLD 10/2/09 FOR SALE These were designed for use with the small AM-5 cube satellite speakers, but will work great with any small bookshelf speakers. I use one with my Boston A-40 speakers. Our photographer uses one with a pair of KLH-911 and "rocks the house" to an un-reasonable level. It sounds great. Has stereo inputs and outputs for amps and receivers rated from 10-200 watts per channel. Will work on outputs rated from 4-8ohms. Internal 5.5" drivers, enclosed in a 6th order cabinet deliver tremendous bass from a small package measuring 19.5" wide x 14" deep and only 8" tall. Designed for horizontal placement and is low enough to fit under many futons, or can be placed vertically in a corner or behind stereo cabinet. Bass is non-directional so placement is not at all critical. You will hear it no matter where you place it in the room. Built-in crossover not only filters out the highs from the woofers, but also filters out the lows that are fed to your satellites so they can concentrate only on the frequencies above the woofers, which will increase their efficiency immensely. Also has Bose patented speaker protection for subwoofers and your satellites. Inputs and outputs via standard "bare-wire" push clips. Sounds great and very clean! Very solidly built and weighs in at 21 lbs unpacked. Comes with our 90 day limited warranty (excluding problems due to under / over powering). Condition 8.5 $169. SOLD 10/2/09 (you just need one for the system) Would match up great with our KLH-911's shown a few rows above. We use KLH-911's extensively throughout the shop. |

Extensively tested on our main system with a myriad of test selections and cuts and with our AF sweep generator. Speakers sound great with no anomalies! The JBL L112. From the same series of one of the most famous of the classic speakers ever built, the JBL L100’s. These are a big brother to those famous speakers and were a couple hundred more $$ at the time at $1,100.00 back then. I was a dealer for these when new. Great 3-way design with lots of brilliance. These are also equally "at home" in the studio environment. Great for medium-large mix-down monitors. They sound incredible. Very accurate even at lower power levels. Beautiful "Real Wood" Oak veneer cabinets housing a very well designed 3-way speaker system. Features include: - 3-way, Bass Reflex / Ported cabinet design -12" Low Frequency Driver (woofer) featuring the JBL 128H-1, Cast Frame woofer, Huge and heavy AlNiCo motor - 4.5”, LE-5, Cast Aluminum midrange (same used in L100 & the 4311 / 4312 studio monitors) - 1”, 044 Cast Aluminum framed, dome tweeters - Front mounted “High Frequency” & “Mid Frequency” attenuators for custom padding the Mids and Tweeters - Heavy-Duty, recessed input connectors - Very well built, heavy cabinet finished in real Walnut Wood veneer with nice grain - 3”, Tuned Port for extended bass response SPECIFICATIONS: Speaker Type; 3-way, Bass Reflex enclosure. Efficiency: 89 dB 1w @ 1m Crossover frequency: 1.1kHz & 3.7kHz Balance control: Variable Tweeter Control Nominal impedance: 8 Ω Recommended Minimum Power Amplifier: 10 The speakers also of course feature a "real" cross-over for sonic accuracy. One great thing about the L112 series, is that unlike the L100’s, they did not use foam as a grill material, so with only a couple minor cosmetic issues, the original “milk-chocolate” brown, knit covered grills are in great shape. The original, Real Walnut wood veneer cabinets are in great shape and just had a fresh coat of "Feed-n-Wax". Again, we have completely gone through them not only listening to different mixed material, but sweeping each through the entire audio spectrum with an audio frequency generator. They look and sound wonderful. Each measures 24.75" high x 14.25 wide x 13.5" deep and weighs 53 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard 90 day limited warranty ( excluding problems due to under / over powering. JBL Century L112 Cond. 8.5 $799. pair SOLD 10/26/09

The vinyl wood grain finish cabinets look near great as do the "chocolate" knit grills. We have completely gone through them, including re-foaming the original 15" woofers with the correct and new, JBL "LE" series foam surrounds for trouble-free service. Again, the only cosmetic issue is the partially missing power meter trim on each ( see lower photos, above). Everyone here was blown away, but what came out of these, even disregarding their size. Super solid, ground shaking low-end, with great detail & sonic balance . For their size, power handling was also impressive. Great, solid low-end (due to the woofer / passive radiator combo). Huge "Wall-O-Sound" at any volume level. Lots of presence, and while the low-end will shake a concrete floor, it remains very "tight". This was their "flagship" speaker for the time period and had an MSRP of $720.00 a pair! After installing new foam surrounds, each woofer was AF swept from 20,000 Hz all the way down to 18 Hz! The Bose 501's. These are the second generations, the "Series II's". Features Bose's famous "Direct / Reflecting" cabinet design. Has front firing 10" woofer and two angled, side firing, "Reflecting" tweeters. These have been completely gone through, including having the foam surrounds replaced on the woofers (which is no easy task. The 501's are probably the most difficult of the Bose or any speaker to access the drivers as the grills are stapled on with brads). Another note on the Bose 501 and most Bose foam surrounds. It is a safe bet that there are NO Bose 501's out there that are over 15 years old (and most are) that do not need the foam replaced on the surrounds. Even if it looks good, if you can stick your finger through it, (and you will be able to) or it feels "sticky", it needs to be replaced. It won't last many songs at any decent volume if you don't. The difficulty in re-foaming 501's is that the grills are nailed on with about 30, well hidden brads and beyond the resource level of most people to deal with. Thus, when they test them, they get some sound and sell them as "speakers work fine and as they should". WRONG!!! They all need new foam if it hasn't already been done in the past 10 years. Again, these, as with most of our speakers, have just had fresh, new foam installed on the drives if applicable. I just had to reiterate that due to all the mis-information out there, especially on the "on-line" auctions. We also checked the internal Tweeter protection lamps. All tweeters in perfect working order. All ready to play and enjoy Features include: - 2-way, "Direct-Reflecting" speaker design - 10" Woofer -2x 3" sealed frame, cone Tweeters in reflecting configuration -Nominal Impedance: 4 Ω ohms - 1.5kHz Cross Over Point - Binding post style wire connections -Self-resetting circuit breaker for tweeter and overall fuse protection - Acoustic Suspension cabinet -Power Handling 20 watts minimum - 100 watts Specs: Driver Complement: One 10-inch, steel frame woofer, two 3-inch steel frame cone tweeters firing in a direct / indirect combination Nominal Impedance: 4Ω Cross-over frequency: 1.5kHz Recommended Minimum Power amplifier rating: 15 watts minimum Recommended Maximum Power rating: 100 watts Again if you're after a pair of "Vintage" Bose, the 501's are one of the most famous of their designs. These are in decent cosmetic shape with normal wear to the cabinets. The top edge banding of the vinyl veneer appears to have been replaced sometime in their past. Also, the top plate of one has been re-glued with epoxy glue for structural integrity. Balance of cabinets have typical, normal cosmetic wear. The original grills in great shape and this pair still has both it's "Bose 501 Series II" grill logos intact. And remember, we have just replaced the foam surrounds on all woofers, for years of trouble free service. Entire cabinet has been frequency swept while being powered by our Hafler test amp. They sounded great! Cabinets measure 24" H x 15" W x 15" D and weigh 42 lbs each. I have a bit of a "bias" towards these as I sold them at the first hi-fi dealer I worked for in the early 80's. I used to show them often, but usually sold their "little brothers" the S-730 and S-530 due to their lesser price. If I really wanted to show off an amplifier or receiver, I would run it through these. Great, balanced sound, nice punchy bottom end. Very efficient and bright where they need to be. Great speaker where mid to higher volumes are desired.
