ü Our technician has completely and EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit which involves complete disassembly of the transport (not an easy task on this deck), cleaning inside and out, COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLING, cleaning and re-lubricating all internal mechanisms and the balance of efforts listed below.

ü Heads inspected for excessive wear (obviously we do this 'early on' as 'excessive' wear will usually negate any further restoration work).

ü All drive tires reconditioned for trouble-free service.

ü All new internal rubber belts replaced for trouble-free service.

ü Rubber pinch roller reconditioned

ü Capstan burnished

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Head alignments and azimuth checked and adjusted as necessary for 'peak performance' with O-Scope

ü All internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü All internal fluorescent displays and LED's working fine.

ü Both hub spindles in perfect alignment.

ü FF, REW, & Play transport functions all test perfectly and controls tested for 'positive / accurate' responsive.

ü Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance.

ü Playback meters zero with factory test tone tape.

ü Tape Counter Function tested

ü Plays perfectly and records well @ ~0dB (between TDK and Maxell tapes) ( we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).

ü Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!! -Both level meters playback even.

ü Speed adjusted to 100% accuracy with 1kHz factory test tape (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 1000Hz +/- 1Hz)

ü Deck has had just over 9 hours of restoration work done, mostly to the transport.

Face is made of beautiful brushed aluminum, and overall the deck is in NEW cosmetic condition. Following the extensive restoration, we did 'test recordings' of a 'ddd' CD on 6 tapes; Sony Normal Bias, Fuji Normal Bias, TDK Normal Bias, Maxell Normal Bias, TDK 'SA' High Bias, and Maxell 'XL-II' High Bias. We found that for Normal and High Bias, of those tapes tested, both the "Maxells" performed VERY well on this particular deck.
Total technician time to restore ~9 HOURS!
(this deck is actually from the 'personal stock' of our Senior Technician)

ü Our technician has completely and EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit cleaning inside and out, tape transport mechanism removed, cleaning and re-lubricating internal mechanisms and the balance of efforts listed below. (this was already a VERY CLEAN & LIKE NEW deck inside before we started our service work)

ü AC voltage set for 'North American' use, and Internal DC power supply tested to correct Voltages before any work commenced

ü Heads inspected for excessive wear (obviously we do this 'early on' as 'excessive' wear will usually negate any further restoration work).

ü Head rotating gears on both wells inspected with a jewelers loop prior to starting any restoration work, and found to be 'hairline' crack free.

ü Main Drive and Counter belts inspected and are in 'like new' cond.

ü Rubber pinch rollers have been reconditioned

ü One VERY important note about this deck. The spindles are 'gear driven' which means that it should WAY OUTLAST most other decks that utilize standard, rubber 'idler tires' for reel activation (everyone thinks that 'belts' are all you need to replace to make a cassette deck work.  While belts are important, it's almost always the 'idler tire' that is the "Achilles Heel"  of cassette decks and causes the VAST majority of cassette deck problems).

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment.

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Head alignment and azimuth at 125Hz, 1kHz and 10kHz adjusted for BOTH directions on both decks for 'peak performance' with O-Scope and w/ STL and TEAC MTT-257H calibration / alignment tapes. Both channels now even output.

ü All internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Front panel removed and disassembled to allow cleaning of the Record and Balance potentiometers.

ü All LED's and fluorescent displays functioning well, with low current draw

ü FF, REW, & Play transport functions all test perfectly and controls tested for 'positive / accurate' responsive.

ü 'Mechanized' Eject door operates smoothly.

ü Tape Counter Function tested

ü Dolby NR circuits / function tested

ü 'Memory / Zero Return' function tested

ü Meters adjusted to even zero with symmetric with Volt meter, O-Scope and w/ STL and TEAC MTT-257H calibration / alignment tapes. Both channels now even output.

ü Both Internal playback amplifier channels adjusted with Volt meter, O-Scope and w/ STL and TEAC MTT-257H calibration / alignment tapes. Both channels now even output.

ü Meters adjusted to even zero with symmetric input with Volt meter, O-Scope and w/ STL and TEAC MTT-257H calibration / alignment tapes. Both channels now even output.

ü Both Internal Record amplifier channels adjusted with Volt meter, O-Scope and w/ STL and TEAC MTT-257H calibration / alignment tapes. Both channels now even output.
ü Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

ü Overall floor noise measured at >-60dB.

ü Speed adjusted internally to 100% accuracy BOTH directions, with 1kHz factory calibration tape and frequency counter (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 1000Hz +/- 1Hz)

ü Plays great and after full service and adjustment, records AMAZINGLY well w/ following results;

1kHz recorded @ 0dB with Dolby C engaged on Maxell XL-II (High bias) tapes plays back @ -2 dB L&R.

Full Bandwidth 'White Noise' recorded @ 0dB w/o NR engaged on Maxell XL-II (High bias) tapes plays back @ -3dB L&R

Full Bandwidth 'White Noise' recorded @ 0dB with Dolby C engaged on Maxell XL-II (High bias) tapes plays back @ 0dB L&R, which equals ZERO dB loss!!

"Real World" test, 'DDD' CD recorded at 0dB +/- 3dB with Dolby C engaged, on Maxell UDXL-II / High Bias tapes sounds great

Bottom line is this deck sounds amazing for playback or recording (always make sure you're playing back 'good quality' tape recordings)

ü Again, Cosmetically, the deck has a few 'battle scars' and isn't going to win any 'beauty contests', but makes up for it in performance.
Total technician time to restore 4+ HOURS!

SOLD 10/14/2021
SHIPPING TO BRUCE IN NEW JERSEY

ü Our technician has EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

"
Original condition was 6-9dB low and slightly distorted recordings L&R. Speed after warm-up was decent at 1007Hz. Bias pots intermittent. PR & counter belt melted. PB level un-even by 4dB and both down. EOT mechanism sluggish, as well as typical "40-year, no maintenance / 'as-found' condition"

ü We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü 4x #2SC1344, "Black legged" transistors replaced on Line-IN / Mic-IN PCB which cured distortion issues on recording and enabled levels to be adjust properly

ü Internal mechanisms, disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed

ü Brakes extensively adjusted on fast wind modes also.

ü Reel motor torque adjusted to correct force in grams. All three motors test perfectly.

ü We also adjusted the reel table heights. Both spindles in perfect alignment and run 'true'

ü We also installed a new counter belt for trouble-free service.

ü All External and Internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Rubber pinch roller has been replaced with brand new

ü Cntr belt replaced with brand new

ü Capstan burnished

ü We adjusted the internal playback levels for standard 700Hz @ 0dB (VR103/V4104) as well as the record levels and both VU meters (VR101/VR102 on PB PCB #RWF-081) mechanically and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes.

ü Headstacks have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Head-stack alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance with factory test tone tape out to 15khz and oscilloscope.

ü Heads have typical, normal wear and are all in fine condition with hundreds of hours left.

ü Both level meters adjusted for even playback level w/ factory test tone tape.

ü Both table spindles run 'true' with no run-out

ü New VU meter illumination lamps installed

ü Bias adjusted (VR301, VR302, VR303, VR304 on OSC PCB #RWR-059) for Ampex GM-456 Grand Master tape (same as modern ATR formulation)

ü Recording tests performed with Ampex GM456 and Maxell UD (Gold / Black) Tapes.
Here’s the results;

GM 456 @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +3.0 dB L&R in STD+STD positions with very little artifacts
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = 0 dB L&R in LH+LH positions with very little artifacts
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +0.5 dB L&R in STD+STD positions
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = -0.25 dB L&R in LH+LH positions
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. Recorded program from "ddd" source was "AWSOME". Best in "LH" position. "STD" was a bit too 'bright'
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = -1 dB L&R in STD+STD positions with very little artifacts
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = -2.5 dB L&R in LH+LH positions with very little artifacts
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. White Noise @ 0dB = +1.5 dB L & -0.5 dB R in STD+STD positions
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. White Noise  @ 0dB = -1 dB L & -2.5 dB Rin LH+LH positions
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. Recorded program from "ddd" source was "Great". Best in "LH" position. "STD" was again, a bit too 'bright'

Pretty damn good numbers for a 40 year old classic!

ü Floor noise measured at >-60dBm

ü Both internal speed pots adjusted to 100% accuracy on 3.75ips and 7.5ips speeds  independently (with pitch control zero'd) (meaning that our 'official' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 1000Hz +/- 1Hz w/ pitch control at ’12:00’ position).

We really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy.

(Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 19.5 hours).

Original face panel is made of beautiful brushed aluminum, and is in great condition NO marks from ever being rack mounted. Sheet metal bonnet and rear panel as well as the original finish all in near perfect shape.
Deck looks and works great!

Looks GREAT & is "Ready-to-go"! The very sought after Pioneer RT-701 Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Will play / record stereo 1/4" tapes on reels up to 7". This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer. If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 30-50% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. This one made it through and all functions test great! Looks and sounds great too! We have completely gone through it.

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

Rewind Time w/ 1200’ Tape: ~100 sec

Following the above stated bench work / testing, our technician has 'Certified' this deck and it is an great performer sonically and mechanically. As stated earlier we have completely gone through it cleaning, lubing, adjusting, demagnetizing and testing everything. Plays and records perfectly. 701's are direct drive thus requiring no drive belt to wear out. The only belt to wear out or break is the counter belt and this one was replaced with a brand new one. (Since the 701 does not use the counter for "Auto-Stop" sensing, if you ever break the counter belt, the deck will still run fine, unlike some other high-end decks. Just FYI)
The Pioneer RT-70X series is considered by us (and we've heard a few others out there stating this as well) to be about the most durable, best built, least stuff to break reel to reel ever made by anyone. If you've been inside as many decks as we have, you can appreciate how simply the RT-701 is built inside. There's just none of the 'Rube Goldberg' mechanisms that most (even some later model machines) have.
Thick & solid brushed aluminum face plate in great condition. Great deck for adding QUALITY reel to reel capability to your audio system (vintage or otherwise), or for archiving / transferring your tape collection to another format such as CD, or hard-drive. Unit includes  an 'e' pdf copy of Pioneer RT-701 owners / users manual. Measures 19" wide x 14.5" deep x 9.5" high and weighs 44 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty.
(Reels & tape shown in photos not included. All are usually available separately if you need them)
This is THE SECOND BEST recording / performing deck we EVER have finished. "The planets all aligned again" and our tech was really able to 'dial' this one in as well!

- We adjusted the internal playback levels for both directions independently as well as the record levels and both VU meters mechanically and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes.

- Headstacks have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

- Head-stack alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope.

- Heads have typical, normal wear and are
all in fine condition with hundreds of hours left.

- New VU meter illumination lamps installed

- Both typically problematic direction indicator lamps replaced by cool running LED's.

- Plays great and Records at +/-0dB on both Normal and High Bias Chrome tape @ 1kHz.

We
really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy.

- Both internal speed pots adjusted to 100% accuracy on either speed independently (with pitch control zero'd) meaning that our 1kHz tape plays back at 1000Hz +/-1Hz.

(Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 9 hours).

"Original condition; Rubber pinch roller had perished and bushing was binding, counter belt perished (melted), Playback speed would randomly and intermittently go super fast (almost 'fast wind' speed) and was noisy when doing that, both reel tables pushed in too far causing mis-alignment of tape and 'reel rub', left channel records low. Bias pots intermittent. EOT mechanism sluggish, as well as typical "40-year, no maintenance / 'as-found' condition"

Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit. We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü We read quite extensivly on the web that the 'run-away' capstan motor was caused by a loose or corroded Molex connector or circuit board pins. Moving it did definitely seem to affect it and seemed to fix the issue once cleaned and re-seated. HOWEVER, as we continued service on it, the problem would show back up. We would then re-clean and even re-tensioned the connectors in the plug. This then seemed to 'fix' the issue...NOT! My tech finally then removed the circuit board and with a jewelers lens noticed that there was a VERY bad solder joint on one of the pins. When the connector was moved you could see the completely un-soldered pin affecting the motor speed. He re-flowed that solder joint, and the rest of the connector joints. That finally rectified the issue.

ü Internal mechanisms, disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed

ü Brakes extensively adjusted on fast wind modes also (optimized for 7" reels).

ü Reel motor torque adjusted to correct force in grams. All three motors test perfectly.

ü We also adjusted the reel table heights. Both spindles in perfect alignment and run 'true'

ü We also installed a new counter belt for trouble-free service.

ü All External and Internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Rubber pinch roller has been replaced with brand new

ü Counter belt replaced with brand new

ü Capstan / cleaned burnished

ü We adjusted the internal playback levels for standard 700Hz @ 0dB as well as the record levels and both VU meters mechanically and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes.

ü Headstacks have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Head-stack alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance with factory test tone tape out to 15khz and oscilloscope.

ü Heads have typical, normal wear and are all in fine condition with hundreds of hours left.

ü Both level meters adjusted for even playback level w/ factory test tone tape.

ü Both table spindles run 'true' with no run-out

ü Bias adjusted for Ampex GM-456 Grand Master tape (same as modern ATR formulation)

ü Recording tests performed with Ampex GM456 and Maxell UD (Gold / Black) Tapes and even Scotch 150.

Here’s the results following our restoration at Oak Tree Vintage;
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +0.75 dB L & +0.5 dB R in LH+LH positions with very little artifacts
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = -1.0 dB L & -2.0 dB R in LH+LH positions with very little artifacts
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. Recorded program from "ddd" source was "AWSOME". Best in "LH + LH" position. Actually sounded a bit 'brighter' on the top-end.
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ -10dB = 0 dB L&R in STD+STD positions with very little artifacts
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ -10dB = 0 dB L&R in LH+LH positions with very little artifacts
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. White Noise @ -10dB = -2.0 dB L & -2.0 dB R in LH+LH positions
Scotch 150 @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +1 dB L & -1 dB R in LH+LH positions
Scotch 150 @ 7.5ips. White Noise @ 0dB = -3 dB L & -3 dB R in LH+LH positions
Pretty good numbers for a 40 year old classic!

We really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy.

(Total time investment in refurb / testing ~32.5 hours).

Original face panel is made of beautiful brushed aluminum, and is in great condition NO marks from ever being rack mounted.
Deck looks and works great!

ü Capstans / flywheels removed, bushings and axels cleaned and re-lubed

ü Capstans burnished

ü Rubber pinch rollers have been replaced with FRESH units

ü Brand new drive belt installed

ü Back tension adjusted on both reel motors.

ü Reel motor start / run capacitors healthy

ü All three motors test perfectly. Following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 7" and 10.5" tapes

ü Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes on both 7.5” and fully loaded 10.5” reels from top speed.

ü Internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Both spindles now in perfect alignment.

ü We also adjusted the reel table heights.

ü Heads have virtually no appreciable, visible wear.

ü Both internal speed pots (VR21 & VR22) adjusted to 100% accuracy on 3.75ips and 7.5ips speeds  independently (with pitch control zero'd) (meaning that our 'official' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 1000Hz +/- 1Hz w/ pitch control at ’12:00’ position).

ü Recording tests performed with Ampex GM456 and Maxell UD (Gold / Black) Tapes.
Here’s the results;

GM 456 @ 7.5ips. White Noise @ 0dB = +3 dB L&R with very little artifacts
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +2 dB L&R
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. Recorded program from "ddd" source @ 0dB = +2-3 dB L&R and 'bright'
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. White Noise @ 0dB = +1 dB L & +2 dB R with very little artifacts
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = -.05 dB L&R
Maxell UD @ 7.5ips. Recorded program from "ddd" source @ 0dB = +1-1.5 dB L&R and 'bright'

Pretty damn good numbers for a 40 year old classic!

ü This Pioneer RT-909 functions, plays, and records perfectly (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).  (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 17+ hours).

ü Face is made of beautiful brushed aluminum and with the exception of a small 'smug' area and other area of light striations (see photos) is in great condition and has never been rack mounted. Deck looks and following it's extensive service, now works great!

Looks GREAT & is "Ready-to-go"! The VERY sought after Pioneer RT-909 Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Will play / record stereo 1/4" tapes on reels 5, 7 & 10.5". This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer. This one made it through and all functions test great! If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 30-50% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. Heads have no appreciable, visible wear, check the record test results above, evidence they’re in fine shape! Following extensive service and alignment, both mechanically and electronically, recordings sound FANTASTIC on this unit now. Looks and sounds great too! This one has never been 'rack mounted' so no 'rack-rash' on the mounting ears. As touched on above, the heads are in beautiful condition, also with none of the common 'green corrosion'. The reel tables do have a tolerable amount of the typical corrosion that is often seen on Pioneer RT's, but doesn't have any on the head cover (which they often do). Also, both the OEM plastic skids are intact now (afflicts about half the 901's and 909's out there (just FYI: the "skids / legs" on Pio RT-909's should always be removed prior to shipping).
Again, we have completely gone through it and it's ready to go!

As stated earlier we have completely gone through it cleaning, lubing, adjusting, demagnetizing and testing everything. Plays and records perfectly, AGAIN, records at +2dB @ 1kHz!

As we replaced one, now the OEM feet / skids intact and perfect (these are commonly broken / partially missing).

Thick & solid brushed aluminum face plate in good condition with only the above mentioned rubs / striations, and has never been 'racked' so no rack screw rack rash / marks!

Prior to arriving to us, the sheet metal case was re-sprayed in satin black and is in good condition. There is an area on the back panel where someone had engraved id info, no obliterated with vinyl adhesive covering it.

These are great machines. I have had this one...

These are great machines. I have had one myself for a few years (this one WAY OUTPERFORMS my personal unit. Need to get our tech to do mine). It's a blast to put on a BIG 10.5" reel with Pink Floyds, "Dark Side of the Moon". Even though it was designed for the consumer market, many were and are in use in schools, universities, libraries, clubs, etc. I worked at a Sheraton Inn in the late 70's and early 80's, and we had two in the DJ booth, that supplied foreground music from about 11AM till the DJ showed up at about 9PM, 7 days a week!

ü  Pinch-roller ‘Lift Mechanism’ completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed (requires pulling head block, and Meter CB, once entire front face panel is removed and is fairly time consuming, but must be done on about 50% of 909's)

Also, both the original plastic skids are intact and un-broken (afflicts about half the 901's and 909's out there (should typically be removed prior to shipping along with the reel spindles).
Again, we have completely gone through it. It has been in my personal office system here at OakTreeVintage for a few years, but I'm switching to a 'high speed' unit.

Pioneer RT-909 Features include:

- 4-Track / 2-Channel
- 5" / 7" / 10.5" Reel Capacity (compatible with standard / normal 4-Track / 2-Channel tape format)
- 3 Heads for instant monitoring of tape levels while recording
- Three Motors for trouble free performance (has a lot to do with it still being a viable piece of gear due to less rubber parts)
- Dual Flywheel, Closed Loop Tape Transport
- BLUE METERS! Dual "Blue", Fluorescent level meters with dimmer selector
- Variable pitch control (
+/- 6%)
- Auto-Reverse for Playback (when using tape with "auto-reverse" sensing foil) (Forward Recording, with forward & reverse playback)
- Dual speeds at 7.5 ips / 19cms and 3 3/4ips / 9.5 cms
- 'IC Logic' / Solenoid Drive Touch Transport control and 'Power Brake' tape handling
- Manual Reverse switches for changing direction with out flipping reels over
- Spring loaded, Reel table locks (no need for rubber stoppers / clamps)
- Independent Tape 'Bias' and 'Equalization' settings
- Repeat function
- Separate & dual concentric mic and line level controls
- Source / Monitor selector (for instant monitoring of recording)
- Independent L & R record enable switches for doing "sound-on-sound"
- Pitch Control (Playback)
- Left & Right output level controls
- 4-Digit, "Blue", Fluorescent tape counter
- 'Timer' Play / Record function
- Dual front mounted 1/4" Microphone inputs
- Variable Output Level controls for each channel (one of the most important features on a deck in our opinion. Allows you to match volume level of other sources, allows adjustment for 'best' pre-amp input to avoid distortion, allows you to change the volume of the deck if you have it located remotely from the pre-amp / receiver as I do, and many other applications)
- Standard 19" rack mountable

Face is beautiful, brushed, Stainless Steel and case is in great condition. Deck looks NEW and works great!

The
Pioneer RT-1011L  Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Ready to GO! This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer. If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 30-50% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. This one made it through with flying colors after about 11.5 hours of bench time.
The deck tests great! Looks and sounds great too! We have completely gone through it. Will play 7" & 10.5" reels.

ü Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.
(in-fact we had both of our Senior Techs go thru it, one after the other, just to make sure we had 'all the "i's" dotted and all the "T's" crossed)

ü Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was disassembled, cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled.

ü We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was disassembled, cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled.

ü One of the reel spindles had been 're-built' when this came in to us. It had 'run-out' (wobble) when utilizing 10.5" reels. We noticed there was a 'hair-line' crack on the reel table spindle that was not solid enough. We replaced the entire spindle / reel table with an OEM (original Pioneer) part (taken from one of my personal decks). Now large reels run 'true' with no excess vibration / wobble.

ü pinch-roller mechanism completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed,

ü PR mechanism solenoid mounts adjusted

ü 'Shut-off' arm removed, disassembled, had bushing and axle cleaned and re-lubed.

ü Tape Lifter arms rotated to 'like new' section / area

ü Capstans / flywheels removed, bushings and axels cleaned and re-lubed w/ 80/90 wt.

ü Capstans burnished

ü Rubber pinch rollers have been cleaned and re-conditioned

ü Brand new MAIN drive belt installed (#42-3030)

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes also (optimized for 10.5" reels, but works great for 7" as well*). .

ü Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them.

ü BOTH direction Playback and Record Head alignment / azimuth was adjusted for peak performance with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope.

ü We adjusted the VU meters mechanically and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes, as well as the internal playback levels for both directions independently and record levels.

ü Deck has been fully calibrated as close to factory manual specs as practical, tested, and found to perform well in all categories

ü Internal Record levels adjusted with proper, factory alignment / test tapes

ü Record Bias adjusted internally, and optimized for Ampex GM 456 tape

ü Records GREAT at approx 0dB on Maxell UD XL-II tape with the following results all recorded at 0 (Zero) dB;
100Hz=0dB
500Hz=0dB
1000Hz=0dB
5000Hz=0dB
10,000Hz=-0.5dB
15,000Hz=-1.5dB
20,000Hz=-6dB

ü  Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü  We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit (and this was a BIG project as it's a VERY complex deck.

ü Broken motor mount transport screws replaced (this alone, required a total strip down to chassis)

ü Transport mechanisms disassembled, cleaned, lubed w/ 'SuperLube', silicone based gel and light machine oil as necessary and reassembled

ü Tape Tension arms disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed, and their springs adjusted and had fresh 500,000 grade silicone lube gel applied

ü pinch-roller mechanism completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed.

ü Capstan / flywheel removed, cleaned bushings and axels cleaned and re-lubed. Flywheel surface burnished.

ü Rubber pinch rollers removed, re-surfaced, conditioned and re-installed with fresh lubricant

ü Fresh, new 'Main' and 'Counter' belts installed.

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes also (optimized for 7" & 10.5" tape.)

ü Back tension checked / adjusted on both reel motors.

ü All three motors test perfectly. Following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 7" & 10.5" tapes (VERY QUICK 'FAST WIND' ON THIS ONE)

ü All pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function

ü We adjusted the VU meters mechanically for correct 'resting position' and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes, as well as the internal playback and record levels.

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment.

ü We also checked / adjusted the reel table heights.

ü Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them

ü Following initial testing after re-assembly, we decided to address the commonly 'above average motor noise' in the TAU-11. We added additional rubber shock mounting on the motor in 'strategic locations', and on the advice of an engineer, replaced the 'Start / Run' capacitor. Replacing the 'cap' had no effect, but adding extra 'shock mounting' did have an effect on reducing the ambient, mechanical, motor noise. Adding damping to reel brake mechanisms also further reduced mechanical noise over original design. We also lubed the 'pinion shaft' on the counter to further reduce noise on 'fast wind'.

ü Playback and Record Head alignment / azimuth was adjusted for peak performance with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope.

ü Speed tested to 98.5+% accuracy following refurb (meaning that our 'verified' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 1015 +/- 1Hz. Very close to perfect).

ü Adjusted to record AMAZINGLY WELL at 0dB both with full bandwidth Pink-Noise, then 1kHz test and in 'Real World' use w/ 'mixed DDD CD' signals. (Tested with Maxell UDXL Tape (bias set to 'Fixed' and EQ set to NAB-LH) ).

ü Floor noise measured at >-60dBm w/ blank tape, L&R

ü Following refurb / service mechanicals tested for 'play torque' at beginning and end of largest size reels, as well as 'Fast wind torque' and 'braking tension' in both FF and REW, at beginning, middle and end of tapes. In other words, every combination of transport function was tested and passed.

ü This Pioneer RT-2022 / RTU-11 / TAU-11 functions, plays, and records VERY WELL (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).  (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 20+ hours).

This is an amazing deck for both recording or playback, again of 'Half-Track / 2-Track' tapes for speeds of 7.5ips or 15ips. Following refurbishment, the deck looks and works great and sounds amazing!!

The Pioneer TAU-11 / RTU-11 / RT-2022 Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Ready to GO! First one of these we've had in 24+ years of dealing in vintage audio (including many of all the other Pioneer Reel to Reel decks. This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Following our refurb / bench time it's now an AMAZING performer (Check the 'recording test results' above and the 'specs' in larger text below). If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 25% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. This one made it through with flying colors after about 20 hours of bench time.

The deck tests great! Cosmetically it's in good condition, with a few minor veneer peels / chips to the rear corners of the road case (see separate photo collage above). Looks decent and sounds great ! We have completely gone through it. Will play up to 10.5" reels.

Pioneer RT-2022 / RTU-11 / TAU-11 Features include:

- Half-Track / 2-Track / 2-Channel Stereo head stack / tape format
- 3 Heads for instant monitoring of tape levels while recording
- 10.5" Max Reel Capacity (The BIG Reels!)
- Built-in Test Tone Oscillator for Bias, Recording Level / Tape Type adjustments and decisions and head adjustments (1kHz and 10kHz generator) (there is also a front located, output jack to route test oscillator to another use)
- Fixed or Completely variable Bias adjustment (owners manual includes a chart with suggested Bias settings for most contemporary tape types / brands / models, but I prefer to do it 'by ear')
- Completely variable Playback Tape EQ adjustment (owners manual includes a chart with suggested EQ settings for most contemporary tape types / brands / models, but I prefer to do it 'by ear')
- 3 Motors (means less 'Rube Goldberg' mechanisms inside like many R2R's)

- DURABLE AC powered capstan motor (lasts decades longer than DC capstan motors of the 'later' models)

- IC logic tape transport for "Touch" control
- Dual speeds at 15ips / 38cms & 7.5 ips / 19cms
- Sound-on-Sound / Sound-with-Sound / Duet recording capable
- Cue Lever for lifting tape away from head in Fast Wind modes or for moving tape close enough to head to monitor fast wind progress

- Input (Source) / Repro (Monitor) selector independently for each channel
- Output level control for each channel
- Dual analog VU level meters

- Analog
Tape Counter
- Spring loaded reel spindles (no need for 'rubber stoppers / reel clamps')
- RCA Line I/O's for all channels
- Dual Microphone inputs with separate L&R, 20dB attenuators

- Portable (as it's in a case with detachable lids / covers and a top located carry handle)

- Accessory connectors for optional Pioneer Remote control

As stated earlier we have completely gone through it cleaning heads and all else, lubing, adjusting, reconditioning pinch rollers and other rubber parts, demagnetizing heads and entire transport and testing everything. Additionally after first round of restoration, we further added rubber isolation to motor mounts.
Tape speed tested and resulted in 98.5% accuracy using a 1000 Hz test tape. Plays and records Exceptionally well (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed CD material and CD test tones looking for correct head Azimuth, tape speed accuracy and making test recordings. Again, check the 'test results' listed above). Pinch rollers and heads all in GREAT condition!!! Very clean and GREAT!

This is a GREAT looking deck with UNBELIEVABLE PERFORMANCE. Probably the best sounding deck I've had the pleasure to audition due to the built in oscillator, fine bias and variable EQ alone
Again, as mentioned earlier, cosmetically it's in good condition, with a few minor vinyl peels / chips to the rear corners of the road case (see separate photo collage above).

This was Pioneers most 'Top of the Line' deck they ever did (yes, considerably above the RT-909), and was designed to offer the 'best recording' capabilities. As an additional possible bonus down the road, with the addition of another TAU-11 Rec/PB amp and the RT-2044 / 4-Track / 2-Channel head block, you could also have a deck that would play standard, commercially produced tapes, or tapes made on standard, consumer reel to reel decks. In other words, you'd have 'all the bases covered'. (No, we don't currently have either available, but they can be obtained give enough time / money.)
All of our restored / refurbished reel to reel decks come with a 7", plastic take-up reel, a 'known good' 7" tape for initial testing of playback, and a 7" tape you can record onto, all to assist you in becoming familiar with the operation / function of your new reel to reel tape deck.
We are including a set of 4 of our Sorbothane IsoPods to isolate the chassis from the surface to inhibit and further reduce noise from transferring to it's environment. Also includes
it's original umbilical cord (just about 'worth it's weight in gold' alone).  Also includes the original case lids / cover plates for both units, as well as the 'smoked plexi' control cover. Comes with an 'e-copy' / pdf download of the Pioneer RT-2022 / RTU-11/2T / TAU-11 owners / operations manual, & service manual if purchaser so desires. Measures 17.5" wide x 21" tall x 10" (from tip of back feet-tip of hubs) deep and weighs a HEAVY 84 lbs unpacked (with 1 'amp unit' attached). Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty.
(Reels & tape shown in photos not included. All are sometimes available separately if you need them. We do ship our decks with a plastic take-up reel, a tape to 'practice record' on and a 'pre-recorded' tape for playback.)

We will be getting more machines ready over the next few days to a couple weeks, but it is a slow process, as every 20+ year old Reel to Reel tape deck requires 10-18 hours of service to be brought back to "usable" condition. Check back often as they will sell out quickly!
