*Note about parts / spares sales

* Our "parts units", parts / spares and related reference information are primarily archived for the purpose of restoration / repair of "Oak Tree Vintage" units first. Only if we do not have a "viable" unit in yet, either already in process or in line to be processed, that may potentially need parts from a "parts unit", will we release available parts for sale (even though they may appear as available for sale to the public). As many of you know, the restoration of a unit can be a long, time consuming process. We may "lock up" parts that we may potentially need in the restoration of a unit (and not necessarily get it marked 'Hold' or 'Sold' on the site right away). Parts are priced according to the "potential value" of the unit they can be applicable to (meaning the amount WE would be willing to pay for the part if that was all that was standing between us having a "shelved unit" or a valuable / sellable unit), time to extract, their rarity & their condition to name a few criteria and likely will be completely unrelated to the original cost / price of a part when it was currently available from the manufacturer.

Parts Photos; We get a number of requests for 'photos' of a specific part. Unfortunately, in most cases that is not practical as the amount of time involved in posting that exceeds the value of the 'unique' part. We will sometimes post photos of less 'unique' parts, if there is a greater chance of them being available in multiple quantities, or on a more 'repeat' basis.

Parts, general condition / circuit board condition; Most of our parts are from 'salvage / donor' units. While we don't sell parts that are 'known' to be bad, occasionally parts will need further adjustment, cleaning, 'tweaking', or in the case of circuit boards, may need old, conductive glue / epoxy further cleaned, and some 'common' parts / components such as, aging / leaky capacitors, parts whose values have drifted, and some epoxy transistors may need to be replaced due to 'green / black / furry' legs, or because those parts were marked as 'sold separately'. Some circuit boards may have 'tired' "landing / solder pads", or severed traces, or cold / bad solder joints which can require solder re-flow or 'jumpers'. Unless noted, circuit boards will be 'crack / split / break' free.

Parts pricing; Most of our parts price / value will be based on a few things. Firstly, we are in the restoration / refurb business, so we consider what we would be willing to pay for the part if we needed it (which again, is what the parts are listed for in the first place, "our units"). Secondly, the rarity / value of the unit the part(s) fit. The 'Tuning Knob' for a receiver that has a final value of $350 will likely be much less than the "Tuning Knob" for a unit with a final value of $1500 or more (a set of tires for a typical sedan will be $400 to $600. A set for a Lamborghini can be $16,000). Thirdly, the 'rarity' of the part. Forth, the 'condition' of the part. Fifth, the difficulty to extract the part, or success rate for extracting certain parts. Sixth; frankly it's a LOT of work and time to part out a unit. Most take 1 to 3 days of shop time to process. Not only the disassembly, but the 4-15 hours of pre-testing / servicing and just as time consuming can be the amount of time it takes to do all of the research we do and the info we list on many parts for cross-referrencing to other units that my use the same parts by scouring service manuals. On many circuit boards we will list every 'semi-conductor' which is also very time consuming. Lastly, every call or email for a part can require 20 minutes to sometimes over an hour of 'phone support', often (about 70% of the time) with me convincing the potential purchaser that they don't need the part I have to solve their problem.
Sorry to sound like a "whiner" about selling parts, but "time is money".

Shipping: Shipping on most 'small' parts if typically via Postal first class or Postal Priority for both domestic (USA) and international orders. Larger parts such as transformers and drivers (speakers) are typically via FedEx gnd.
Some parts sales such as those for empty 'speaker cabinets', empty 'component cabinets / covers / bonnets' and 'speaker grills' and most are 'doomed' from the start. Due to their size and required packing supplies, the cost of 'packing for safe transit' and shipping are commonly 'disproportionate' to their cost, typically nearly equal to and sometimes greater than the cost of the part.  Think about it. An empty speaker cabinet or stereo receiver case is essentially the same size as a complete one. Yes the weight will be less, but most of items that size are calculated on 'dimensional weight', not actual weight so are commonly just as expensive as shipping a 'complete unit'. Secondly empty component cabinets have to be packed to disallow breakage, typically requiring nearly as much packing materials as an entire unit. Speaker grills have to be 'sandwiched' between foam sheets in large, custom ordered boxes (all relatively expensive).  It is what it is....

A non-response to an email of phone call / voice message request for a part that we don't show on one or our pages, or is already marked "SOLD" will be typical. We simply don't have the time / man-power resources to respond to every query we get for items we don't show as avail. Most folks get that. Having said that, I / we may respond if we have information on a substitution or other useful information relating to it.

A non-response to an email of phone call / voice message request for a part (we may appear to have, but typically 'highlighted in Orange or Yellow'), likely means that we are still determining which parts we are going to need for the restoration or repair of one of our units. Again, the parts are first for the restoration of our units and secondarily for the public market. Since we list the parts available for ourselves, it is not much effort to modify the menu's for web publication, which in turn makes the reference information and occasionally the part available to the public. Frankly, publishing them to the web, in many instances, makes it easier for us to determine if we have the part for our needs as well. The alternative to all of the above would be to not offer them at all to the public, however most parts are available to the public for sale.  Also, parts requests can occasionally take time for us to respond to. While we may have a part listed, and we like to keep the website 100% accurate, occasionally a part will be 'used by us' or 'previously sold' and we by oversight, and we did not get the web listing marked "SOLD", or the part gets  'mis-placed' or 'lost' (laid down somewhere in the warehouse(s) and then it get's lost track of (that happens to our coffee cups all the time, then we find it months later with 'a good batch of 'penicillin' growing in it), so we like to 'lay eyes on it' prior to responding. Sometimes we just can't figure out which cabinet or drawer parts were assigned to (and we're working on a system for that one).

Some folks email / call and want us to respond either way / whether we have the part or not. Again, we simply do not have the time resources to do that. Our time must be utilized on the requests we can fulfill. 
Sorry for all the excuses, but that's how the 'system' (or lack thereof) works.
And, if you don't see it, we likely don't have it.

PIONEER CS-77 / CS77 SPEAKER PARTS / SPARES

****There are two versions of Pioneer CS-77's (we are not referring to the slightly later CS-77A's) we know of. There is no external difference. You must remove the Grill / Grates / Guard / Screen / Front Covers / Grates / Screens / Front Covers (or what ever term you want to use) / Grates / Screens and / or back to determine which version you have. One with vented dust cap on the woofer and one without. It would not really be noticeable to substitute based on stock availability, but technically the vented dust cap would be more efficient if all else is equal. The tweeter in the "B" version, as we are calling them, is also much more efficient. Also the midrange has a slightly different number and the port is slightly different from one version to the other. This may or may not be advantageous to your needs. The Grill / Grates / Guard / Screen / Front Covers / Grates / Screens / Front Covers (or what ever term you want to use) / Grates / Screens are interchangeable. Version "A" drivers are all soldered in place, whereas the version "B" drivers all use removable "spade" type clips.       The version "B" speakers, as complete units do offer cleaner, more efficient "top-end" with much more definition and a bit more subdued midrange. The Version "A" speakers would sound similar to the "B's" by substituting the PT-222F-4 for the PT-222F (Again, not to be confused with the later CS-77A series. There a simply two different versions of the original CS-77's. We are simply calling them "A" and "B"). ****

PIONEER CS-99, CS-88A, CS-77A & CS-66G TWEETER REPAIR / SURROUND RE-FOAM / RE-EDGE JUST FYI FOR FOLKS LOOKING FOR PIONEER CS-99, CS-88A, CS-77A & CS-66G MODEL SPEAKERS. Pioneer utilized foam surrounds on the tweeters of these 4 models. After 20+ years, it will be difficult to find a pair that still has the foam intact (as foam surrounds generally have a useable lifespan of 10-15 years, depending on the environment they have spent the majority of their lives in).  Essentially 100% of the "PIONEER CS-99, CS-88A, CS-77A & CS-66G" models we have seen have their tweeter foam rotted and will need to be repaired or replaced / re-foamed (yes, it might 'look' ok, but if you 'poke' it with your finger, it will crack or crumble, thus it was bad before you poked it). We have only found one suitable "fix" for this (and yes, we have searched high and low for a 4 Ohm replacement for the CS-99A, a 16 Ohm replacement for the CS-88a, or even a suitable 8 Ohm for the CS-77a, with no* success.) NEW INFORMATION ORANGE COUNTY SPEAKERS NOW HAS A REPLACEMENT SURROUND THAT WILL WORK ON THIS IT WILL NEED TO BE TRIMMED SLIGHTLY ON THE OUTSIDE, BUT WORKS WELL. THE PART NUMBER IS: #1-023 THEIR WEB SITE IS  www.speakerrepair.com   (This applies only to vintage Pioneer models CS-99, CS-88a, CS-77a & CS-66G tweeters).         The tweeter just to the left is from the CS-77a. Looks good, but surround is rotted. A visibly fine surround, is still bad and will visibly deteriorate after a few songs are played on them. We see these at on-line auctions often, and in every case the speakers either still have their rotted originals or a replacement tweeter, of some-sort installed. Due to the rarity of 4 & 16 ohm tweeters, and poorly fitting '8 Ohm' tweeters out there, we have to assume that the replacement tweeters the owners / sellers have installed are of incorrect impedance, which at the least, effects high-end efficiency (volume) & at worst can create load issues for whatever amplifier they are connected to. All this while using the word "Mint" or some similar adjective to list / describe the speakers.  Again this is only prevalent in Pioneer CS-66G, CS-77a, CS-88a and CS-99 tweeters. It is not a factor with Pioneer CS-77, CS-88, CS-99a, CS-33a, CS-66a or CS-901a's tweeters. PS. We also see a similar problem with many other manufacturers' older speakers generally from 15+ years ago, except for the earliest versions of speakers which commonly used cloth surrounds.  Any manufacturers' speaker utilizing foam surrounds (common from typically 1980 thru present) that is over 10 years old should be suspect. PSS. Even though a speakers foam surrounds may "look" fine, they probably are not! Vintage speakers posted for sale by individuals & at 'on-line' auctions / yard sales have commonly not been in use for many years (other wise they probably wouldn't be for sale). In many cases, once you start playing them more than a couple minutes, you can watch the foam disintegrate (especially on the woofer) right before your eyes, just by playing 2 or 3 songs at above average volume levels. PSSS. *We have discovered a tweeter from at least one model of 'Sony' (the Sony SSU-1270, Tweeter part number; #1-502-560-11), MAY be a suitable replacement for the Pioneer CS-88A tweeter, but we haven't tried one yet. It, most importantly, is 16 Ohms, so if one could be 'shoe-horned' in place, it MIGHT function fine. Again, we have done no tests yet. Just FYI while you're out looking.

While at JBL, Locanthi designed some of the legendary drivers such as the 375 compression driver and the Linear Excursion Series LE-15 woofer. For Pioneer he authored the HPM series. These speakers were a direct assault on the JBL L100 and L200 series. The HPM speakers evolved into Pioneers superior Pro division TAD (Technical Audio Devices).

The "B" version has a body that is approx 7mm thick.                HP-015A-1                                                                                       HP-015B-1 PIONEER HPM SUPER TWEETERS            (Click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) HOW TO TEST THE PIONEER HPM 'SUPER TWEETERS': I get many calls from folks that think they need to replace their Pioneer HPM Super Tweeters because they think they are blown. While most 'home audio' speaker 'tweeters' and 'super tweeters' are fairly 'fragile' when compared to the lower frequency drivers in a speaker system, the super tweeters in Pioneer HPM series speakers are pretty 'robust'. Much of that 'robustness' is a bit 'perceived' however, as the chance of them getting much recorded material is fairly low, due to their crossover point. They are crossed over at 12,000 cycles and 'there ain't a lot typically go'in on up there' in most recordings, and not likely at a level sufficient to do much harm. I'm not saying you can't damage them with too much 'brute force' or more likely from clipping an amplifier, but it's not as likely as you might think. Due to most recorded music not having a lot of material in that frequency range, that's very strong in level compared to the rest of the frequencies that are likely happening at the same time, it can be difficult to actually hear or perceive the 'super tweeters' functioning, which is why many people assume they are not working or are 'blown'. The best way to test them is with 'Pink Noise' or 'White Noise'. These are random noise generations (hiss) that are generally displaying all frequencies at the same time. There are a number of sources for either. You could own or invest in a 'Pink' or 'White' noise generator. Not really necessary for the average person. You could source a CD or LP with Pink or White noise recorded on it. Much less expensive, but still not generally necessary for the 'average Joe'. A ready source for 'White Noise' is something most folks have access to and that is an FM tuner. Most FM tuners allow you to disable the 'FM Muting' which will allow the tuner to pass the 'hiss' in between stations. So to test your speakers, simply turn on your FM tuner / FM receiver, turn off the FM Muting, tune to an area of the dial that is generating a 'nice, clean hiss' and listen to your speakers. This is one of the first tests we do (especially out in the field) to determine the 'general health' of a speaker system. Simply put your ear in front of each driver to see if it is functioning (BE CAREFUL; DON'T TURN THE VOLUME UP ANY MORE THAN NECESSARY TO DETERMINE IF A DRIVER IS WORKING. You not only risk damage to your hearing, but you will certainly 'desensitize' your ears for further / accurate testing for subsequent speakers). It may STILL be difficult to hear anything coming from the super tweeter. Turn down both the 'Mid Freq' attenuator and the 'High Freq' attenuator (no, the super tweeter is not tied to the attenuator). IF you have fairly decent hearing, and your super tweeter is functioning, you should hear a fairly faint hiss emanating from the HPM super tweeter. It won't be particularly strong, and no where near as strong as what comes from the 'cone tweeter'. Depending on the condition of your hearing (you need to be able to hear frequencies in the 12-16kHz region, which is 'up there'), you may have to turn the volume up more on your pre-amp / receiver. Certainly by about '9'Oclock' on the volume you should hear some 'hiss' coming from them. If not, there is further testing that can be done, but it requires removing the super tweeters, either to distance them from the other drivers, or 'bench testing' them individually, but that is probably too risky to the health of the super tweeter if it is still a 'functioning unit' for the purpose of this writing...

A few notes about the Pioneer HPM-1100 HP-019 'Super Tweeters' (or any of the Pioneer HPM series 'Super Tweeters' These are 'piezo' / Crystal element drivers. They do NOT have an impedance as most speaker drivers do (ie; 4 Ohm / 8 Ohm / 16 Ohm etc.) so measuring them with an Ohm Meter / multi-meter will not give you any meaningful information about their condition. Secondly, they are generally designed to play 12kHz and above. There's not much going on in those frequencies at anyone time in most musical recordings at any one instance, so if you are trying to test them with recorded material, it will be difficult. Another factor that adds to the difficulty of testing them (at least while installed in their speaker cabinet, is their 'close proximity' to the other tweeters / drivers. To really test them properly you should use 'white noise' or 'pink noise' as opposed to 'recorded material', and they should be at least removed from the cabinet and pulled away (as far as their wires will allow), or removed and disconnected completely for 'bench testing'.  Which brings up a point. If they are so hard to hear (even in the best of circumstances) what are their purpose. They were designed to be the 'one up' / 'ace in the hole' improvement over the hugely popular JBL L100 at the time, and that was about the only way the designer could make an improvement. Even the loudest HPM 'Super Tweeters' have very low output, relatively speaking, so most listeners will / would not miss them if they were blown or missing. They're also one of the few drivers that we see varying amounts of output from. Most drivers either work or they don't, but we see variances of from 3 to 6dB out of Pioneer HPM Super Tweeters commonly (and that's the ones that are working properly). Some will have VERY faint output on the test bench. Some will have none. Thirdly, they are VERY susceptible to 'torque' / 'torsional' damage during removal / re-installation. Their mounting screws must be torque'd / tightened evenly and not too snug. That torque can be enough to damage the crystal membrane (and we're not aware of a 'fix'). One of our consignors recently purchased a pair from an ebay seller that "are in working condition, not blown". He called us and said he couldn't hear anything from the replacements once installed. I explained to him all of the above, and said to bring those and the originals in for bench testing, as they may work, as he wasn't testing them correctly. Also, due to output differences we could 'match' a pair to install using our RTA / dB meter. Unfortunately when he brought them in, they were all essentially DOA. I could 'torque' the housing on three of them and get output that would jump from zero, to VERY faint, to normal, but if left simply sitting on the bench none had any output.  I could also 'tap' lightly with my finger on two of them and get output intermittently. He said he would contact the ebay seller for 'relief' (good luck with that. I always tell folks that if you're going to purchase speaker parts from on-line auction sellers to purchase 2 to 4 times as many as you need as the likely-hood of the parts actually working correctly will be slim). The above should illustrate how 'risky' / difficult it will be to replace your HPM super tweeters (assuming you need to). Most listeners will be just fine without them working.
