about parts sales
* Our "parts units" & parts are primarily archived for the purpose of
restoration / repair of "Oak Tree Vintage" units first. Only if we do not have a
"viable" unit
in yet, either already in process or in line to be processed, that may
potentially need parts from a "parts unit", will we release available parts for
sale. As many of you know, the restoration of a unit can be a long, time
consuming process. We may "lock up" parts that we may potentially need in the
restoration of a unit. The parts are valued by the "potential value" of the unit
they can be applicable to, time to extract, their rarity & condition to name a few criteria.
A non-response to an email request for a part (we may have),
likely means that we are still determining which parts we are going to need for
the restoration or repair of a unit. Again, the parts are first for the restoration of our units and
secondarily for the public market. Since we list the parts available for
ourselves, it is not much effort to modify the menu's for web publication.
Frankly, publishing them to the web, in many instances, makes it easier for us
to determine if we have the part for our needs as well. The alternative would be
to not offer them at all to the public, however most parts are always available
to the public for sale. Thank you for your understanding.

 (click on above thumbnails to enlarge photos) Above right are photos of B&O / Bang and Olufsen S-75 speakers that have their crossovers burned to a crisp, and oddly still function to a fair degree. We have seen this on a couple of other pair. We have purchased about 4 pair over the last 12 years. One pair for ourselves. The first pair we purchased years ago, I have personally. The next pair, did function, but we found their sound was slightly different, one from the other after some CAREFUL and DETAILED listening, side by side with pink noise. After testing all the drivers independently with no appreciable differences, we decided to inspect the crossovers. That's when we were amazed to find charred wires, touching each other internally and burnt / melted components. This was likely due to circuit resistors that were spec'd way too small for the amount of current an amplifier can produce. Don't ask me how the drivers still functioned connected to those crossovers. We parted them out and didn't think anything else about it, other than how someone had so overpowered a speaker as to "flame" the crossovers. Then the next pair that came in had similar symptoms. We had forgotten about the crossovers on the first pair, and did all the tests again. We then pulled the woofers and found even more badly burned crossovers. At this point I inspected my own pair, for fear of a fire hazard. Mine were fine. I am however, going to replace the very flammable wool, hair, shredded cloth internal batting with non-flammable insulation. The forth pair that has come in has the same problem with the crossovers. According to our math, that's a 75% failure rate! Just FYI when you're out there buying speakers from the "wanna-be's" on the auctions, saying that their "speaker tests fine" and is in "mint condition". Yeah, right. While we have seen crossovers in other brands / models of speakers damaged due to overpowering, overheating, abuse, accidents, it's typically evidenced by exploded capacitors or broken / burned traces, or fatigued solder joints. We also see coils that have come loose from their moorings, but never anything this catastrophic. This is only a problem we are aware of in the S-75 models, but it may be known in other models as well. The B&O, S75's are great sounding speakers by design, and we are going to be researching a suitable replacement crossover to use in these speakers in the future as rebuilding the factory crossovers does not appear to be practical for a number of reasons. We will post them to this page if and when that happens. |
